Based on the results of a comprehensive environmental self-assessment, hoteliers are awarded a 1-5 Green Key rating and provided with guidance on how to "unlock" opportunities to reduce environmental impacts and operating costs through reduced utility consumption, employee training, and supply chain management.
The program assesses the 5 main operational areas of a property and covers nine areas of sustainable practices:
Upon completion of the program and being awarded their Green Key Rating, an on-site inspection may be conducted to confirm the rating. Green Key is the only program of its kind to conduct on-site inspection and validation of ratings in Canada and the United States.
The Green Globe certification is a premier global certification label for the sustainable management and operations of travel and tourism businesses. The standard is based on such agreements as Agenda 21 and ISO 14001 which covers areas of sustainable management, social economic equity, cultural heritage and environmental health.
Each Green Globe participant is benchmarked against specific Sector Benchmarking Indicators (SBI) appropriate to their operations. Green Globe has 3 levels: Bronze (Benchmarked), Silver (Certified) and Gold. Organisations that have achieved Green Globe Silver for a period of 5 or more continuous years are awarded the Gold logo
