Rebecca have been working in Events for all of her professional life and began working in sustainability in events in 2015.

Initially, her involvement began as research for her employer, but once she started to learn more about sustainability, Rebecca became very interested in the subject in general, and the potential of every individual to reduce his/her negative impact on the environment.

Soon after she was assigned ISO 20121 implementation for her company, and later became the Sustainability Manager.

Rebecca loves the events and tourism sector and she says that it makes sense for her to apply her knowledge in sustainability to this area.

In her role she has implemented a sustainability strategy within my organisation in 3 different countries; that alone was challenging due to the different cultures and ways of working in each market.

Rebecca is also interested in sustainability in tourism and how destinations and local entities can contribute towards reducing negative impact and creating a positive legacy.

Currently she is working as a Sustainability Consultant on various different projects; teaching, training, auditing and communication.

As Hotel General Manager for 20 years managing events in hotels throughout Australasia, the biggest as Executive Assistant Manager at Rydges Wentworth Hotel during the Olympics in Sydney 2000, to over 200 private weddings in design hotels in Bali, managing events differently became my unique skill. After appointment as the Bali Hotels Association Environment Executive, I was also able to lead hotels through Earth Check's certification programmes providing training and guidance with groups of hotels. It was this volunteer role that led me to join the GreenAsia Group as Sustainability Consultant for the Hospitality Industry, based in Bali. Since returning to Australia, I have created my own Consultancy for the Hospitality industry and now work in that role for Tourism Noosa.

Matthew has been in PR and Event management for 10+ years, from a managerial level of an international PR agency to brand manager of a leading mobile phone, to becoming a founder of a local event production workshop.

He has come across different roles of all kinds of events. One of his biggest campaigns was the global launch of Samsung Galaxy S (1st gen).

Matthew has been interested in sustainable events since the 2012 London Olympic. It awoke him the event industry is silently damaging our environment and our society after every successful event; but it also inspired him to take action without hesitation.

Hong Kong is a vibrant and hustle city. While fans around the world are cheering at the Rugby Sevens in the stadium, local peoples celebrate the Lunar New Year with dancing dragons and lions on the street. He loves Hong Kong and says that it is a city that is full of fun.

Matthew believes that sustainable events management approach is one of the most important drivers for our society to become a sustainable city.

He is an expert in environmental communication and dissemination and was appointed European Diamond Ambassador in 2015 within the EE MUSIC platform, a European reference in the field of sustainability in musical events. He is also the jury specialized in sustainability in the Fest Awards.

Brett's first taste of event sustainability came as a seasonal contractor for ESPN over the course of 6 years, helping to mitigate the environmental impacts of various events around the country.

After a short career as a remediation engineer, he joined Kilowatt Events, Inc. and helped launch their new dedicated sustainability wing, Kilowatt One.

Because Kilowatt's expertise is producing traditional events, the company advantage comes from their ability to weave event sustainability into the fabric of the event production process under the control of a single company, ultimately saving time and effort for clients and creating deeper impacts throughout event operations.

His education in engineering gave him the technical toolset needed to tackle large-scale social and environmental issues while his degree in business has provided the ability to clearly communicate the value in doing so to all stakeholders.

Details of experience:

Russ Spollin has a passion for events and sustainability, working with festivals and community events to help improve their sustainability performance.

His sustainability journey began a decade ago as a workplace union environment representative and has taken him many wonderful places, including deep down compost toilets and high atop mountains of recycling!

His main activities are as Director and Sustainability Manager for Redfest Bristol, a social enterprise arts and community festival attracting 20,000 people annually.

Russ says that his interest in sustainability started to become a professional focus during his time as a Union Rep in the civil service from 2007-2015. He became an Environment Rep and a key member of the cross department cross grade working group to improve our sustainability performance of the organisation. Successes included engagement initiatives on organic/fairtrade food and healthy living, implementing LED and smart lighting technology leading to reduced energy bills, switching to a renewable energy provider, implementing full recycling facilities at all sites, organising free 'Dr Bike' bike maintenance days, and supporting members on mental health issues in the workplace.

His sustainable event management experience began with Brisfest and Montpelier Bean Feast.

At Brisfest Russ had experience as a stage and area manager. Himself and his colleague (who has aviation industry environmental management experience) joined forces and began the early stages of a sustainable event management system.

They completed the baseline measurements and began engagement with a variety of stakeholders internal and external. Unfortunately as Brisfest did not return to an outdoor festival event, they decided to put the project on hold indefinitely. However, the experience was invaluable.

At Bean Feast he was a committee member involved with various aspects of the event. He began to focus on waste, taking on full responsibility for management of waste at the event, ensuring the site was kept litter free and all waste streams were fully segregated. They also measured energy and water. Using IG Tools, a sustainability report was produced and presented to the team, which informed future decisions for the event.

Ross' main project is Redfest Bristol, that delivers a high quality arts event for the community of East Bristol. The sustainability project has been running for 3 years and is proving to be a great success.

Sustainability is represented on the board of directors by himself. They measured their baseline in 2014 and have been making improvements ever since.

Their event attendees have grown exponentially, from 6000 to 10,000 to 20,000, however, our per attendee carbon footprint has decreased. Initiatives such as free cycle parking facilities, encouraging more to walk and less to drive, recycling initiatives, solar powered stages, free drinking water, reusable cups and compostable serviceware have been overwhelmingly well received by all stakeholders.

The last years offered unique challenges and opportunities due to a change of event format - from an single day outdoor festival to a multi day multi venue takeover style event. 

Priorities were engaging in a more indepth way with venues and sponsors, promoting sustainability in a broader sense within the community, and improving our environmental management system.

Now,  we are looking very positive indeed for Redfest's future.

Luca has 28 years of experience as procurement manager and more than 15 years of experience in sustainable procurement/supply management.

Since 2014 he has experienced the design and implementation for F.I.M. (International Federation of Motorcycling) of an ad-hoc sustainable event framework for motorsport sector, specifically for motorcycling sector becoming the advisor of Italian Mugello and Misano circuits for MotoGP events (the top class of motorcycling discipline). The first ever sustainable event framework (K.i.S.S. - Keep it Shiny and Sustainable) in the motorsport sector.

This key sport sector is a worldwide unique massive driver increasing the sustainability awareness across fans, teams, riders, organizers, promoters, community, suppliers and sponsors.

That makes his expertise and know-how very strong and wide around sustainable events management.

The framework includes several environmental and social impact initiatives.

In  addition he designed a similar programme for “ETRC - European Truck Racing Championship” ( 50.000+ spectators) with the first execution at Misano Circuit race in 2018. 

In 2019 he designed and executed the sustainable management of the most important and leading exhibition of motorcycles and bikes in the world called EICMA hold in Milan (Italy) every year ( 800,000+ visitors and 1.800+ exhibitors). The event has been ISO 20121 certified, it is the first ever automotive exhibition to obtain this status in the world.

I have been working on sustainable sports events since 2014 providing the organizing committee with the appropriate knowledge on how to reduce negative impacts as well as raising environmental awareness to all stakeholders and participants involved. I manage my own environmental consulting company ZOTEN in Athens, Greece but my activities are not limited to Athens as I travel to many areas of the country to consult on a variety of environmental issues.


Sustainability in event management inspires me for many reasons:


Firstly, as an environmental consultant I understand the necessity of reducing our negative impacts on our planet through any means or actions possible. Events are such an opportunistic way to reach and educate so many people and at the same time make a collective difference in event practices.


Secondly, my experience with the Greek people organizing and participating in these events was extremely positive despite the difficult period (Capital Controls, economic crisis) as they were willing and enthusiastic about contributing to this cause.


I found that their knowledge of event practices was limited, to say the least, but they were eager to learn. This gave me a lot of motivation and hope. Regardless of the difficulties they face, they are conscientious of the need to follow through with sustainable practices.


Thirdly, I truly believe in the ‘triple bottom-line’ concept of maintaining a balance between ‘planet, people and prosperity’ which can be achieved through event greening.


At the moment Greece needs inspiration and motivation to overcome all the issues it is presently facing. Events are a means to promoting environmental stewardship, social responsibility and prosperity

I have collaborated with the organizing committees on a number of road races in Greece, one spanning the distance of Athens to Sparta (245km) promoting sustainability practices. I have also participated in raising environmental awareness in outdoor bazaars. I organized the implementation of recycling programs in elementary schools, which unfortunately had no support from the municipality. I have given speeches to students informing them on a variety of environmental issues as well as to educators on how they can make a difference in their schools.
